How might different cultural views on communication impact relationships between the Western and Asian culture

If we cannot communicate properly, it will hinder relations between the two cultures.

Western culture places emphasis on direct-eye contact, shaking hands, and other forms of non-verbal communication. We believe that these forms of communication symbolize sincerity and honesty.

However, Asian cultures do not shake hands, and depending upon your role in the community, you may not use eye contact. This is normal for them, but westerners view it as suspicious and avoidance; this break-down in communication dissolves trust.

However, if people from each culture study the other culture before engaging in business and/or communication, then they can better understand the other culture and overcome initial hesitation. Great thought-provoking question.

  1. Yeah, I'm experiencing that lately seeing a woman that is Taiwanese… The whole eye contact thing is kind of disturbing and I keep second-guessing myself on if I should look directly at her or away just off to the side or something… complicated.
